Luxury Vinyl Plank

What LVP Actually Is — And Why Tampa Bay Homeowners Keep Choosing It

Luxury vinyl plank is a multi-layer synthetic flooring product. A high-resolution photographic layer mimics the look of wood — or stone, or tile — under a rigid SPC or WPC core and a tough wear layer on top. Modern LVP is genuinely convincing in appearance and extraordinarily practical in performance.

In our showroom, LVP outsells every other product category. That's not marketing — it's what we see when homeowners come in, look at the options honestly, and weigh what actually matters in a Florida home: waterproofing, durability, comfort underfoot, and ease of maintenance in a humid climate.

There are trade-offs. LVP cannot be refinished the way hardwood can, and cheaper products with thin wear layers don't last as long as the premium versions. We'll always give you a straight answer about what a product is actually built for — not just how it's marketed.

What the Specs Mean

The Numbers That Actually Matter

Wear Layer Thickness
12 – 28 mil
12 mil minimum for standard residential use. 20 mil for active households with pets. 28 mil and up for commercial. This is the single most important spec — don't buy on price alone.
Core Type
SPC or WPC
Stone Plastic Composite (SPC) is denser and more rigid — better for Florida slabs and temperature swings. Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) has a softer feel underfoot. Both are waterproof when properly specified.
Free Estimates
In-Home
We measure your space, assess the subfloor, and provide a detailed written estimate before any commitment. No guessing, no surprises — call (727) 849-5273 to schedule.
Typical Lifespan
20 – 30 years
With proper care and the right product for your household's activity level. Cannot be refinished — replace planks if damaged. Choose the wear layer you'll need, not the minimum that fits the budget.
Waterproofing
100%
True waterproof LVP has a 100% PVC or SPC core. Water cannot penetrate it. Not "water resistant" — waterproof. Safe for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and below-grade spaces.
Subfloor Flatness
3/16" per 10 ft
LVP needs a flat surface. Humps or dips cause click-lock joints to fail over time. We check this on every measurement visit and tell you upfront if prep work is needed — no surprises mid-install.
Why LVP

What Makes It the Right Choice for Most Florida Homes

💧

Genuinely Waterproof

Not water-resistant — waterproof. Puddles, pet accidents, dishwasher leaks, and Florida humidity won't damage the planks. Safe for every room in the house, including bathrooms and laundry rooms.

🌡️

Dimensionally Stable

Florida's humidity swings would cause wood to cup and gap over time. LVP is synthetic — it doesn't expand or contract with moisture. It's why it's now the default choice in new construction across Pasco and Pinellas counties.

🐾

Scratch and Dent Resistant

A quality wear layer handles dogs, kids, dropped pots, and furniture drag without the damage you'd see on hardwood. Not indestructible — but significantly more forgiving in active households.

Whole-Home Continuity

Because it's waterproof, one LVP product can flow through kitchens, bathrooms, living areas, and hallways without transitions. That seamless look is increasingly what homeowners in our area are asking for.

🧹

Low Maintenance

Sweep and mop freely. No special cleaners, no refinishing schedule, no wax or sealer. In a coastal Florida home, that's not a luxury — it's practical.

💰

Free Estimates — No Commitment

We measure your space, assess your subfloor, and put together a detailed written estimate before any work begins. No high-pressure sales. Come see the full selection in our 14,000 sq ft showroom in Holiday.

The Florida Factor

Why This Climate Changes the Calculus

We've been installing flooring in Tampa Bay since 1968. The conversation about what works in Florida homes has changed significantly over those 55 years — and LVP is a big part of that shift.

Florida's average indoor humidity regularly sits above 60% without active dehumidification. Solid wood flooring expands and contracts with those swings — which shows up as cupping, gapping, and eventual damage in homes without consistent climate control. LVP is dimensionally stable, meaning it simply doesn't react to humidity the way wood does.

For coastal homes within a few miles of the Gulf, salt air is an additional concern. It accelerates corrosion on metal components and can affect adhesive-based flooring systems. Click-lock LVP avoids that problem entirely.

We recommend LVP for: kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, living areas, hallways, and any room where moisture is a real possibility. We recommend hardwood for climate-controlled bedrooms where the homeowner genuinely values real wood and is willing to manage the conditions for it.

Common Questions

LVP Flooring FAQs

Is LVP flooring good for Florida homes?
LVP is one of the best choices for Florida homes. It's 100% waterproof, completely unaffected by humidity and temperature swings, and requires no special maintenance in a hot, humid climate. It doesn't cup, warp, or gap the way wood products can — which is why it's become the default in new construction throughout Tampa Bay.
What wear layer thickness do I actually need?
For a standard residential household, 12 mil is the minimum we'd install. If you have dogs, kids, or heavy foot traffic — go 20 mil. For commercial or rental properties, 28 mil and up. The wear layer is the protective coating over the print layer; thicker means longer lifespan and better scratch resistance. Don't let anyone sell you 6 mil for a family home.
How do I get a quote for LVP flooring?
We provide free in-home measurements throughout Tampa Bay — Pasco, Pinellas, Hernando, and Hillsborough counties. We measure the space, assess the subfloor, and put together a detailed written estimate before any commitment. Call (727) 849-5273 or request online.
Can LVP be installed over my existing flooring?
Sometimes. LVP can float over many surfaces — concrete slabs, tile, even hardwood — as long as the subfloor is flat (within 3/16 inch over 10 feet), dry, and structurally sound. Existing tile with cracked grout or uneven surfaces usually needs attention first. We check this on every measurement visit and tell you exactly what prep is needed before the quote.
How long does LVP last?
Quality LVP with a 12 mil or thicker wear layer typically lasts 20–30 years in a residential setting. Unlike hardwood, LVP cannot be refinished — when it wears through, planks are replaced. Choosing the right wear layer for your actual usage is more important than brand name.
Do you install LVP throughout Tampa Bay?
Yes. We install across Pasco, Pinellas, Hernando, and Hillsborough counties — New Port Richey, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Trinity, Clearwater, Spring Hill, Brooksville, Wesley Chapel, Odessa, Lutz, and more. Free in-home measurements with no travel fees. Call (727) 849-5273.
